Insomnia And Acupuncture

Acupuncture essentially helps to remind the body that it can be healthy. Repeated sessions retrain it to go in that direction naturally, so it eventually will do that without needing therapy.

In treating insomnia with acupuncture we begin like detectives, analyzing the body’s mysteries to discover what-done-it. We may palpate to see if there are tender zones, check your tongue and radial pulse for clues. We ask questions related to how you can’t sleep. Soon, seemingly unrelated symptoms lead us to a Report Of Findings, and to a treatment strategy.

Acupuncture essentially helps to remind the body that it can be healthy. Repeated sessions retrain it to go in that direction naturally, so it eventually will do that without needing therapy.

The patterns we see often include.

  • Difficulty falling asleep; wide-awake at sleep time but listless during the day; anxious; has palpitations and/or chest fullness; reddish complexion; is thirsty; forgetful.
  • Difficulty sleeping; agitation; chest discomfort; dry throat, thirst, mouth sores.
  • Wakes frequently and has difficulty going back to sleep. Excessive dreaming, easily angered, chest pain/fullness, agitation/depression
  • Poor, restless sleep. Dizziness; blurry vision, heaviness in head, palpitations., abundant sputum, full-feeling chest, ringing ears, poor appetite, belching, nausea, maybe overweight; possible dysphasia.
  • Easily upset emotionally; agitation, sleep problems; Headache, red face and eyes, constipation, dry mouth & throat, burning sensation in palm and soles.

ClarityMost people do not present in neat configurations, but have overlapping patterns. Thus we treat the symptom and its underlying cause in order that the body can truly repair itself.

Treatment typically involves using between 4 and 12 tiny sterile pins that are used once and thrown away. We have a map of the body that tells us what area to target. It’s not unlike have a roadmap or grid of a city where the lights are so we can repair them.

Acupuncture often ignites the body’s own ‘feel-good’ chemicals like endorphin. This typically invokes a feeling of deep calm and relaxation. The body is often in sympathetic nervous system overload (fight or flight syndrome) or else exhausted. This sense of wellbeing often carries over into sleep time and begins to retrain the body, and mind, to sleep.

There are techniques to short circuit one of the main causes for insomnia: Excessive worry. “If you had my problems you’d have insomnia too” is often heard. And while it’s true that life has many ways to intrude on one’s sleep, acupuncture assists the body to overtake the mind’s intensity without resorting to medication.

What’s Dreams Got To Do With It?

The Ancient Chines used different treatment protocols depending on how their patients’ dreams manifest: Are they frightening, restless or perhaps include Flying, Falling, floods and chaos; fire, or violent?  Believe it or not there are classical treatment strategies for each of those dream patterns. These days we tend to use a more modernistic approach, while being mindful of these classical ways of treating.
